The American Sexual Health Association (ASHA) states one in every two people will contract a sexually transmitted disease (STD). Some STDs are life-long while others cause unpleasant symptoms and potential complications. At Premier Urgent Care, we want to change the stigma toward STDs and make patients feel comfortable to walk into our Oxford, CT and Newington, CT office and request testing. We want to help you get diagnosed early in order to stop your symptoms and prevent transmission to others.
General Information About STDs
An STD is a disease you contract during sexual contact, whether oral, vaginal intercourse, or anal. With infections like genital warts, you don’t even need to have sex. The growths are contagious through skin-to-skin contact. While condoms do reduce your risk of contracting an STD, it’s still possible to become infected with certain STD’s even when using condoms properly all of the time.
The most common STD is the human papilloma virus, also known as HPV. While most people don’t experience any symptoms from it, some forms lead to cancer. Herpes is another common disease spread through sexual relations, and it’s incurable. Chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis are common but treatable. It doesn’t matter which STD you contract; you may never know you have them if you’re not requesting testing because we only test upon request or you’re symptomatic. Unfortunately, STDs don’t always cause symptoms, especially in its early stages.
When you come into our office, we’ll ask you questions regarding your sexual history. We’ll also inquire about any symptoms you’re experiencing. These factors help us determine which diseases we should test you for since there isn’t one test that detects all sexually transmittable infections. For instance, we may conduct a blood test to check for HIV. A urine sample, on the other hand, checks for chlamydia, syphilis, or gonorrhea. If you have any sores, we may collect a fluid sample for evaluation. We may also analyze any discharge you have.
We want patients to understand that the treatment for most STDs is very minor. Generally, bacterial infections are treatable while viral infections may only be managed. Bacterial infections like gonorrhea, chlamydia, trichomoniasis, and syphilis may be treated using an antibiotic. In some cases, one dose is adequate.
The virus herpes isn’t treatable. We do prescribe an antiviral drug that decreases the number of outbreaks you experience. The drug lowers your virus count. In some cases, it reduces it close to undetectable levels. It’s still possible to transmit herpes to others even when you’re undergoing treatment, but it does decrease the risk.
Once you undergo treatment for certain STDs, we will ask you to return to our office for retesting to check if the treatment worked.
We Provide Education
Part of the service we provide for STD treatment and prevention is education. We inform you of how to prevent an infection in the future. If you’re currently with a partner, we advise you to encourage him or her to seek out testing and treatment as well. Additionally, we’ll educate you about the consequences of different STDs, so you understand the relevance of exercising safe sex practices.
Why Choose Us
We understand STDs are uncomfortable to discuss. We, however, want you to know that they’re common and can happen to anyone who is sexually active. We’re not here to judge you. We just want to make you feel comfortable enough to request testing and talk openly with us.
